The Mizzou Law Veterans Clinic is proud to celebrate the promotion of Clinic Teaching Assistant Jessica Esguerra, a third-year law student and member of the U.S. Air National Guard, to the rank of Major (O-4). Jessica, who previously served as a student advocate in the Veterans Clinic, and now serves as the Clinic’s teaching assistant, continues to demonstrate exemplary leadership and dedication both in uniform and in her work on behalf of veterans in the Veterans Clinic.
Jessica’s promotion to Major places her among an elite group of officers selected for advancement in 2024. The selection process is rigorous and competitive, with selection rates slightly down from prior years as the service seeks to shape its next generation of leaders.
Attaining the rank of Major is a significant milestone in an Air National Guard officer’s career, often signifying over a decade of service, leadership, and expertise. Majors typically serve as senior staff officers, entrusted with greater responsibility for planning and executing missions, mentoring junior officers, and contributing to the strategic direction of their units. Jessica’s selection reflects not only her accomplishments to date but also the Air National Guard’s confidence in her potential for continued leadership.
“Jessica is a vital member of our team here at the Veterans Clinic,” said Clinic Director Brent Filbert, a retired Navy JAG Corps Captain. “She was an impressive student advocate, and she continues to make an impact as our teaching assistant. It’s no surprise to me that she’s been selected for this honor. As someone who has been through the promotion process myself, I know just how significant it is to be selected for Major. This promotion is a clear reflection of Jessica’s leadership skills, commitment to service, and bright future ahead.”
Jessica’s promotion highlights her ability to balance military service in the Air National Guard with her rigorous legal studies and leadership role in the Clinic.
