Veterans Clinic Staff Attorney Carter Brooks Templeton Settles Case with Department of Justice

The Mizzou Law Veterans Clinic has reached a successful settlement with the Department of Justice in the case of Ricky v. United States, delivering justice for a veteran client represented by the Clinic. The case centered around a veteran’s entitlement to Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC). The case addressed the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records’ denial of CRSC to the veteran.

The case was argued by Carter Brooks Templeton, staff attorney with the Veterans Clinic, before the United States Court of Federal Claims. The litigation team also included Mizzou Law student Brady Hays, who assisted with the briefing, and Mizzou Law alumnus Braden Wright, who contributed to the case’s legal development. Brent Filbert, Director of the Veterans Clinic, served as co-counsel throughout the litigation.

“It was a privilege to argue this case in Washington, D.C., and to force a settlement with the Department of Justice,” said Templeton. “Our goal was to achieve a fair outcome for the veteran, and I’m proud of the work our team did to make that happen.”

The Mizzou Law Veterans Clinic, nationally recognized for its impact on veterans’ rights, continues to represent veterans and their families in matters involving VA benefits, record corrections, and federal litigation. The Clinic has recovered millions in benefits for veterans and remains committed to fighting for those who have served.
